Visual Flows

Have you seen this incredible work by Fernanda Viegas and Martin Wattenberg, found here?  You can see a real time wind map of the United States showing the ‘the delicate tracery of wind flowing over the US.’

What strikes me is the minimalism and apparent simplicity of representation, which can have been anything but simple to achieve.

In the gallery section of the website you can see specific moments such as October 29,2012 – Hurricane Sandy landfall. A lot of information, typically, doesn’t always reach beauty in its representation but this data set does just that in the hands of these designers. Aptly called ‘Poetry in Motion’ by the artists, the windmap is featured in Chapter 4, Spatial Structures: Maps in Isabel Meirelles’ excellent book, Design for Information: An Introduction to the histories, theories, and best practices behind effective information visualizations, published in 2013.
